Knitwear is currently sitting centre stage in the fashion world and many of the catwalk designers have drawn inspiration for their collections from historic references such as the Baroque. Fashion is also looking to the handicraft textiles of Eastern Europe and the nomadic lifestyle. The Rowan designers have taken these strong trends and worked the different key looks into three distinctive stories in Magazine 54:
Romancing – A beautiful collection of romantic lace and patterned knits photographed in the historic setting of Haddon Hall, Derbyshire.
Folk – The patterned folk textiles of nomadic eastern cultures inspires this colourful collection of women’s and men’s knits.
Essentials – A collection of the key shapes and textures on trend, designed into simple, easy to wear styles that compliment the season’s essential looks.
There are also 2 online collections available in this magazine with 6 exclusive free patterns in each of them! Click on the following links below to view these collections.

I like Dhurrie bc it’s a modern twist to the cape and I love that it has a scarf attached.
Sorry, had some trouble with posting comments..I also like the practicality of Dhurrie.
I love Berenice Wrap, is chic and romantic.
I love Vivaldi – the neck is so different and interesting.
So many fabulous designs… but my eye keeps going back to Aida. Love that brocade design!
The whole magazine is beautiful as always but my favourite is the Crystal wrap sweater. I love Kidsilk Haze and the attached shawl wrap is so pretty and unique.
I like the grey snuggly hat. Not that I can knit ! X
I like Alcina’s simplicity and luxurious drape.
Too, too beautiful. Too many choices. Berenice, Vivaldi, Salome, Alcina…where to start
I love Salome. It’s romantic, fluffy, lacy and ruffly. With just a hint of sexy.Everything I adore about kid mohair. Love it!
Reblogged this on MonsterYarns and commented:
In case you don’t follow this great blog – a double reason to do so now!
I love the sweater in romantic section with the ruffles around the waist. I never thought that I would LIKE ruffles around a waist, but this sweater is absolutely gorgeous.
I love silla. It’s romantic and sexy!
I like Alcina from Rowan 54, it’s so lovely and delicate in Kidsilk Haze. (I signed up as a blog follower for the contest, I’m not much for Facebook)
As always, Rowan has made CO difficult! Such beautiful designs and such little time. I know I would CO Salome for my stepdaughter who is getting married in February 2014. Wouldn’t that beautiful sweater look gorgeous for a rehearsal dinner?

I absolutely love the Berenice Wrap…I’m always a sucker for the cover design and I can’t resist that stunning shade of purple!
Hello! I saw the article on you in the latest Rowan newsletter and had to check out your blog. There are so many beautiful patterns and yarns it is hard to choose, but I am really wanting to make Brigette from the Angora Haze brochure in the color it is shown in. Thank you!
I do love the Ukraine fairisle vest as I am getting in touch with two handed colorwork.
The Soumak Scarf Wrap is gorgeous! Colourful and versatile – just my kind of thing!
I like Bodrum as it’s slightly unusual
Great choice 🙂 thanks for commenting & entering the competition x
I LOVE THE MENORCA. IT’S SO DELICATE AND GRACEFUL
Great choice! Thanks so much for leaving a comment 🙂 x
Hi Claire! I just love the folk-inspired sweater. It is showcases a beautiful palette of colours in an intricate design that I would aspire to make my own. I have spent the last two years training as a folk musician here in the north of Sweden and, on my musical travels, I have seen similar yarn artistry as a reflection of the musical and cultural traditions in Scandinavia. Much of the work I am influenced by has multi-stranded colourwork here in Sweden and in Norway. This Eastern European folky style would blend in very well as there are similarities across many folk cutures. It would look – and feel – very fine to wear this at a folk music gig, playing the clarinet, keeping warm from the cold, perpetual snowflakes falling outside the window….

Wow, you make it sound so beautiful Christina, I can imagine the folk inspired knitwear, the music & the snowflakes right now… Thank you for your comment 🙂 Claire x
Thanks, Claire. Those folk designs must be bringing out my poetic side… 😉 It would be an amazing knitting challenge. Christina 🙂

Hi dear Claire! It is with great pleasure that I have discovered your blog today here in Brussels! I would love to take part in the competition you launched and win the Rowan Knitting & Crochet Magazine 54. You asked which design I prefer in this very magazine… it is defintiley and without doubt the Salome sweater from the “Romancing Collection”. Why? The answer is simple and irrevocable: this sweater is amazingly beautiful! The soft colour like icecream, the fluffy yarn like clouds in a hazy sky, the romantic and so very artistic design, all of this make it a dream!!! The girl looks like a fairy in it and the only thing I can think about is to wear it as quick as possible. But first, I have to knit it 😉 Thank you for your nice blog and hope to talk to you soon! Christina
